NOW: Biggest direct standoff in North America since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962!!

Russian warships and a nuclear-powered submarine have arrived in Havana, Cuba, for military exercises. The Russian fleet includes the frigate “Gorshkov,” the nuclear-powered submarine “Kazan,” the fleet oil tanker “Pashin,” and the salvage tug “Nikolai Chiker.” These are key vessels in Putin’s nuclear strike force and they sailed as close as 25 miles from the Florida coast. A US Navy P8 Poseidon ‘Sub hunter’ flew over the coast watching the Kazan which is reportedly equipped with 4500-km Kalibr-M missiles.

These exercises are obviously part of a broader Russian response to the U.S. support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. Coming into our backyard is a big middle finger from Putin who quite understandably doesn’t take President Biden seriously and is pissed at the proxy war he is fighting against Russia in its backyard.

A quick aside

It is interesting to look back at the 2010 elections in Ukraine. These were the last to occur before the 2014 war. (NOTE: Zelensky has assumed dictatorial power in Ukraine and has not called an election during the war with Russia.) It clearly shows that the east of Ukraine identifies with Russia and the west feels European. For all the money we are handing to the Military Industrial Complex to keep them happy and to gin up resentment against Russia, the peace treaty will probably fall more or less along these lines when it divvies up the spoils.

Back to Cuba

The U.S. has been tracking these Russian vessels and has deployed ships to shadow them. The U.S. Navy is monitoring the exercises as the situation has escalated significantly, with reports indicating that U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) are on high alert.

The Russian exercises in the Caribbean come amid major tensions over the war in Ukraine. Cuba has assured that the presence of the Russian ships “does not represent a threat to the region.” The exercises are expected to include long-range bombers flying along the U.S. East Coast and involve hitting targets from a distance of more than 370 miles, Russia’s defense ministry said in a statement, and an exercise in anti-aircraft fire.

Putin recently threatened to supply his most potent weapons to countries or regions close to his NATO enemies in what he sees as a tit-for-tat for the US, Britain and France supplying Kyiv with missiles for use by Ukraine on his territory. Daily Mail

The U.S. and Canada are closely monitoring the situation and have taken measures to ensure the security of their territories. The Canadian frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec is among the ships shadowing the Russian fleet. The U.S. military and Coast Guard are also tracking the Russian vessels.

The situation is dynamic, and the U.S. and Canada are prepared to respond to any developments.
